A native of Tell City, Barbara is proud to call Tell City her home! Barbara was born on December 21, 1955 to Vernel “Dude” and Virginia Nelson. She graduated from Tell City High School where she was active in student leadership activities and later attended Indiana State University.

Serving the Tell City community has always been a strong focus in Barbara’s life. For several years, Barbara served as the Children’s Librarian at the Tell City Public Library where she supervised the children’s department and coordinated the activities for the children of this community. However, in 1984, Barbara redirected her public life to City Hall where she was named the Deputy Clerk-Treasurer for the City of Tell City.

In the City Election of 1987, Barbara ran a successful campaign and was elected to the Office of Tell City Clerk-Treasurer. She went on to successfully be re-elected to the Office of Clerk-Treasurer and is currently completing her fifth term. Barbara feels that it is indeed an honor to serve the citizens of Tell City!

During her years as Clerk-Treasurer, Barbara has been committed to providing the citizens of Tell City with the highest level of service. To achieve this goal, she has been an active member of the Indiana League of Municipal Clerks and Treasurers, having served as District Director and currently serving as a member of the State Executive Board. Through the Indiana League of Municipal Clerks and Treasurers’ educational program, Barbara has earned the title of Indiana Accredited Municipal Clerk.

Barbara’s community involvement reaches beyond City Hall where she is a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Perry County Democratic Association, Kiwanis, Tri Kappa, Friends of the Library, American Legion Auxiliary, Marksmen Booster Club and the Tell City Historical Society. She has also served on the Southern Hills Counseling Center Board of Directors, as well as, a past president of the Tell City Mrs. Jaycees.

Barbara married Clay Ewing in 1976. Barbara and Clay are the parents of two children Micki Kidder and Matthew Ewing. Both children are graduates of Indiana University. Micki, who is employed at the University of Notre Dame, resides in Granger, Indiana along with her husband Scott and 15 month old daughter Grace.

Matthew resides in Bloomington, Indiana and is employed by Indiana University. Barbara says they are definitely a “house divided” as they cheer for both the Hoosiers and the Irish!

Barbara is committed to the citizens of Tell City! She feels the citizens of Tell City deserve to have a Mayor who has strong leadership qualities, a solid understanding of municipal government, and the ability to manage tax dollars. Barbara knows that when both the city and its citizens work together as partners, the end result will be a community that everyone will be proud to call home!
